Cooking outdoors

Cooking and being outdoors are two of my favourite things.  It’s Victoria Day weekend here in Canada And we were so blessed to have such nice weather. When Zander was a lot younger, we would cook out on the deck often, especially as soon as the weather warmed up.

I needed a break from wearing Willow for her nap so I kept the other two engaged.   They both love to help In the kitchen and use little serrated knives so far no cuts – thank goodness. They have both been in the kitchen since two years of age. I had tested a simple BasicEgg Pasta recipe by Jamie  Oliver before and was happy to use it with the kids. Simple.  1:1 ratio of egg to durum semolina.  1 egg :100g.  Mix, knead, chill and test.

What else does a pasta dough and a pizza cutter remind kids of?  Play-doh. So when they each learned they had their own dough and could make their own shapes, they we’re super excited. Of course, the pieces were too thick, so I had to re-roll each one.

I setup our little butane portable stove and a pan and pot.  We were set. While the  doughs  rested, they made lemonade.  They love that! Not just any lemonade, it had to have mint from our garden!  So they picked and weather them.  What kid does not enjoy mashing things?

Enter sugar, mint leaves, strawberries, a rolling pin and a milk bottle. And they loved tasting it and adjusting the recipe.  What fun.

We spent two hours just making lemonade, pasta and eating it.  So much fun. I guess this is my way of having an outdoor kitchen – coz we’ll just never be able to afford it.

What have you cooked outdoors with your kids? Other than bbq?

Happy long weekend.

I love playing pretend cooking with Z. He has such vivid imagination. We made cupcakes today and pasta. Earlier I had him help me bake an apple pie. I let him cut the apples after they were cored and sliced. He used a butter knife, not to worry.

V has this thing with putting any article of clothing onto her head. As if dressing herself. It’s funny watching her, especially when she has underwear instead. She grabbed my nursing bra and put it on and it happened to slip onto her head and it looks like a hijab. Haha.

Saturday’s are great for many reasons. One of them is the Evergreen Brickworks. We headed down there just after 9am and found ourselves very glad we did. The Farmers Market was
teeming with fresh produce. The lovely golden beets and colorful carrots screamed put to us so we bought 3 bunches. I have never had such delicious beets before. The golden ones make the red ones pale in comparison.

We were a little late for the Hands in the Bowl program, but managed to join in anyway. It’s a great kids cooking program that has a max of 12 participants. Z got to make bean dip today, even though he didn’t like it. (He even expressed his dislike for the food. Then on the way out, he told the coordinator that he will be back and that, “next time, I will choose what I want to make.”. V got to wear an apron, too, so she didn’t feel left out.

After, we headed to the Chimney Court. It’s a great space with plants and water collecting structures. Nice thing is that the kids can water the plants with watering cans available. As well, they had a cattail seed mud ball making activity that Z thoroughly enjoyed. After the seed balls were made, Z got to throw them into the water. That part was fun for him. (I didn’t get to see it because I was napping Vin the stroller.)

Then it was lunch time. The highlight was Jamie Kennedy’s fries. The best fries, hands down. So good. We also got grilled cheese sandwich since Z was not eating the taco salad we got. I think it was just too hot, noisy and overwhelming for him to eat. In the end, he did.

It was a packed and busy day. A great way to spend a nice Saturday morning.

I love to cook and I’m happy Z does, too. Sometimes he wants to “just see” even when I’m just boiling something. Funny. I let him cut bananas with a table knife and he did a great job! We made banana brownie bars from The Chew.

V is so funny. When Z is on the iTouch she wants to look. Here she is trying to get the device from him. Z was watching Yo Gabba Gabba.
