What the…?

Night waking for V have been strictly just for feedings for the last 2 months. I have not had to change her diaper because of poo in that long. So it’s always been a breeze going to her and feeding her for a few minutes and going back to sleep.

Tonight, she had a lot of gas for some reason. To top it off, she was in such a happy and alert mood – like totally awake, I kid you not, when I picked her up. It’s the kind when I get her after a nap or morning wake up. Alter she fed, she pulled off the breast and stared at the shadow of the rocker happily smiling at it. Strangely enough she had a shart so I changed her anyway.

Now she’s in the crib, slowly falling asleep. I listen for her since I can’t see her eyes because she’s facing away from the camera. As I returned from the bathroom I noticed Z’s door open so I closed it, thinking M must’ve left it opened before. Strange, I thought.

Then it dawned on me what happened when I returned to our bed. z had woken up. Apparently he woke up balling his eyes out, saying he can’t sleep anymore and he’s scared of the shadows. So M had to pick him up, calm him and sing him back to sleep.

Just as I thought V was slowing down, I switched back to her on the video monitor to catch her slamming down hard on the mattress with her arm and saying, “Aayah yah yah…”. It sounded like she was in a native drumming circle because she has one of those plastic covered mattresses (yeah, the kind that would make you sweaty if you slept on it).

Hope she goes back to sleep soon. This is not how we imagined the night would go. But then again, every night for us is an adventure in sleep, sadly.

Z always notices the older girls wherever we go. At the park on Davisville we went this afternoon, a little girl was on the seesaw and Z wanted to go the other side. He was so little that she was rocking him the entire time. Z had a smile on his face.

After V’s 1.5 hr nap, I took her out of the carseat for some air and a change of scenery. I nursed her and let her sit on the bench by herself. She did a great job.

Homemade English Muffins

It’s been awhile since I posted a food blog. This one is from Alton Brown. It’s super easy and turned out delicious. Of the 2 cups of flour I subbed 1/4 for whole wheat.

I didn’t have any metal rings and wasn’t about to open 5 cans of tuna, which I didn’t have anyway So I rummaged through my kitchen drawers and saw the metal rings for the mason jars. Who doesn’t have a ton of those anyway? The muffins cooked perfectly in them.

Some tips to help you make pretty English muffins.
1. I used a nonstick crepe pan instead of a griddle (coz I didn’t have one). Make sure it’s hot before you put your batter in. Also, let the pan heat up slowly on low-medium so that your muffins do not burn.
2. Only out 1.5 tbsp of batter in the rings so they do not puff up into ginormous and lopsided-looking muffins.

That’s all. Enjoy them hot with jam. Yum yum.

An Experiment on Sleep

Daylight Savings Time really messes up sleep for kids – especially my kid.  He has been waking up at 5 am for the last few days.  It was a very nice day out today so we decided to head to the Yonge-Eglinton area for a stroll.  We thought we would keep him in the stroller after lunch and walk around to nap him.  Nope, that didn’t happen.  What DID happen, though, was Violet had a 1.5 hr nap.  She LOVED the walk.

Zander got to play at the playground and he had so much fun.  When we got home, he was so exhausted that we swore we did not want to do this again unless circumstances called for it.  You see, our kid does not crash and burn, but he gets very aggressive, to the point where he starts throwing things.  As we were unloading the car, including the kids, the iTouch battery died and he just thought to chuck the device out onto the driveway.  M got really mad and we told him he was banned from using any kids of device for a while.

The nice thing about all of this is that we got to put him to bed earlier, like regular time, in hopes that this will fix the DST repercussions.  We’ll see what time he wakes tomorrow.
